SUMMARY:Lunch + Learn: Wisdom Over Wealth
DESCRIPTION:Scripture is not often considered as a source of wisdom when making financial decisions\, yet it is rich with financial principles\, from Genesis to Revelation. \nOn Tuesday\, March 11\, John Cortines\, Director of Grantmaking at Maclellan Foundation\, will share and discuss a key passage on wisdom and wealth from Ecclesiastes. From this book packed full of wisdom\, we’ll discover what and who biblical financial wisdom is. \nThis Lunch + Learn is sponsored by SmartBank. \nAbout John Cortines\nJohn Cortines oversees the Maclellan Foundation’s global granting\, leading a team that speaks 30+ languages and works in every corner of the globe. John began his career as a Petroleum Engineer with Chevron. While at Harvard Business School\, he encountered a radical call from God to reframe his perspective on generosity and shift his career into the nonprofit sector\, where he has held various leadership roles for the past 10 years. \nJohn’s books include God and Money (2016)\, True Riches (2019)\, and Wisdom Over Wealth (forthcoming\, 2025)\, which together have over 70\,000 copies in circulation. \nJohn lives in Tennessee with his lovely wife Megan and their six children\, where they homeschool and homestead. In his free time\, John enjoys writing and speaking\, serving on various boards\, and building farm fences. He holds a MBA\, MS in Geophysics\, and BS in Chemical Engineering. \nAbout the series\nJames 3 tells us “wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving\, considerate\, submissive\, full of mercy and good fruit\, impartial and sincere.” James also tells us “if any of you lacks wisdom\, you should ask God\, who gives generously to all without finding fault\, and it will be given to you.” But how do we actually receive and live this out in our workplace? How does the wisdom of God affect our practical daily decisions? \nIn our 2024-25 Lunch + Learn series we will be looking at what it means to lean into wisdom in our vocational lives. We will look at: \n\nWhat does it look like to seek wisdom in job/career transitions?\nHow do we lean into wisdom in daily decisions in the workplace?\nHow does wisdom change how we posture ourselves in the world?\nWhat are practices we can build into our work rhythms that help to lead with wisdom?
